We learn now from Wu and colleagues10 in this issue of Circulation that T cells and the chemokine CCL5/regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) are also increased in WAT in the setting of murine and human obesity (Figure). A previous study did not find elevated CD3-positive cells by immunohistochemistry in WAT of both genetic and high-fat diet-induced mouse models of obesity.
Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 5 (also CCL5) is a protein which in humans is encoded by the CCL5 gene. It is also known as RANTES (regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted.
A variety of chemokines and chemokine receptors have been detected in neoplastic tissues [1, 4]. We will focus our attention primarily on the C-C chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5), also known as Regulated upon Activation, Normal T-cell Expressed, and Secreted.
