Phenotypic results were used as the gold standard. Of the total 111 samples, 108 results were included in the final analysis. Three specimens were excluded; one yielding a growth of non-TB mycobacteria, and two due to un-interpretable results. The pulmonary samples were decontaminated with 1% NALC/NaOH and centrifuged. Auramine-rhodamine fluorescent AFB smear was read and the specimen inoculated onto Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ) slant and MGIT (Becton Dickinson Diagnostic Instruments Systems, Sparks, MD, USA) supplemented with oleic acid-albumin-dextrose-catalase.
