Histology. 5-µm thickness sections from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded liver were cut on a microtome. To detect neutrophils, sections were stained with naphthol AS-D chloroacetate esterase according to manufacturer’s instructions (Sigma-Aldrich). Neutrophil number was counted in 10 high-power fields (×400) in each mouse using a Nikon Eclipse E800 Microscope. Ten low-power field (×100) pictures of each mouse were obtained from H&E-stained sections and the necrotic area quantified with ImageJ 1.
