Multiple genes are regulated by the IRPs. Iron scarcity induces binding of IRPs to the single IRE in ferritin, erythroid 5-aminolevulinic acid synthase, aconitase, and succinate dehydrogenase mRNAS to suppress translation initiation (Aisen et al. , 1999; Eisenstein and Blemings, 1998; Haile, 1999). Simultaneous interaction of IRPs with multiple IREs in the 3´ UTR of the TfR mRNA selectively causes its stabilization.
