PTH is released from the parathyroid gland in response to low serum calcium and induces the production of calcitriol by activating the expression of the renal CYP27B1 gene. In contrast, reduced levels of PTH stimulate synthesis of the inactive 24,25-(OH)2D3. Within cells, calcitriol functions as a steroid hormone inducing the expression of calcium-binding proteins called calbindins. These proteins include calbindin 1, 28kDa (encoded by the CALB1 gene) and calbindin-D9k (encoded by the CALB3 gene).
