Testosterone is converted to 5a-dihydrotestosterone and 5ß-dihydrotestosterone by 5a-reductase and 5ß-reductase, respectively. The enzyme 3a-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase converts the reduced forms to 5a-androstanediol and 5ß-androstanediol, which are subsequently converted by 17ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase to androsterone and etiocholanolone, respectively. Androsterone and etiocholanolone can also be formed from androstenedione via the action of 5a-reductase and 5ß-reductase forming 5a-androstanedione and 5ß-androstanedione which are then converted to androsterone and etiocholanolone by 3a-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, respectively.
