An abscess in the psoas and iliacus muscles. It typically results from a local or regional spread of an intestinal or renal abscess or from a blood-borne infection, e. g. , after a drug injection.
Tooth decay is often the main culprit of a tooth abscess. Tooth decay causes openings in tooth enamel, allowing harmful bacteria, dead tissue and white blood cells, often referred to as pus, to enter the center of the tooth. Antibiotics often are enough to destroy the bacteria and allow the abscess to heal. However, occasionally, an abscess can lead to a blood.
Abscesses can impair blood flow to neighboring areas. As a result, these areas are deprived of nutrients. This can cause a gangrenous condition which can result in the loss of a limb or even death itself. If an abscess is treated early on, it poses no real threat. Left untreated, however, abscesses can be deadly.
