The Portuguese Studies Program (PSP) is a program within University of California, Berkeley's Institute of European Studies (IES ) which is part of International Area Studies (IAS). Since its establishment in 1994, its many activities have been supported by the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD) of Lisbon and various UC Berkeley programs. The Portuguese Studies Program is a distinct entity from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (which teaches language, literature and culture).
The Portuguese Studies Program at Rhode Island College takes students from second-language beginner to advanced levels of proficiency as measured by ACTFL and CAPLE standards. Students acquire the necessary second-language skills and cultural background essential for teaching professionals, health and public service employees, business managers and executives, and graduate programs.
Several of our faculty are formally involved with or are active in other departments or academic units on campus—for example, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric, Film and Media, Gender & Women’s Studies, the Portuguese Studies Program.
