KL2 Mentored Career Development Program The KL2 Mentored Career Development Program at Mayo Clinic is a three-year research program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) that guides you toward an independent clinical research career. Mayo Clinic actively recruits a diverse team of research scholars who represent a variety of clinical research disciplines.
The institutional mentored career development programs, e. g. , the K12 program and the K12 component of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) program, typically support individuals for 2-3 years, which may not be enough time for an individual to transition to research independence. As a result, if an applicant were initially supported by an institutional mentored career development program, the NIMH will consider allowing such an individual to receive, in aggregate, up to six years of mentored K support from a combination of institutional and individual mentored career development awards.
In addition to this opportunity, NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) support a variety of other mentored career development programs designed to foster the transition of new investigators to research independence. These other programs may be more suitable for particular candidates. NIH also supports non-mentored career development programs for independent investigators. Information about all NIH Career Development programs may be found at the NIH Extramural Training Mechanisms website.
