Identified initially in muscle cells, myocyte enhancer factor 2 (MEF2) is a member of the MCM1-agamous-deficiens-serum response factor (MADS) family of transcription factors (Yu et al. , 1992). There are four members of MEF2 genes, MEF2A-D. Although MEF2 was originally discovered in muscle cells to promote the expression of many muscle specific genes, they were late found to be expressed in other tissues and cell types.
