Electronic systems test program Apollo communications system ALSEP command link test report Patrick, A. E. To verify the command link from the unified S-band Manned Space Flight Network (MSFN) to the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP), a series of tests was performed at the Manned Spacecraft Center at Houston, Texas. The ALSEP command link test program was primarily devoted to the investigation of anomalies associated with the Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package (EASEP), which was placed on the lunar surface by the Apollo 11 astronauts, and the investigation of the effects of two simultaneous uplink (MSFN-ALSEP) signals on the ALSEP.
Other experiments were deployed by the crew and then monitored from Earth by radio telemetry after the crew departed. This group of experiments was termed the Early Apollo Scientific Experiment Package. It was less extensive than the experiments performed on later missions, both because of time restrictions on the EVA and because of limitations on the payload mass carried on the first landing attempt.
