Perchlorate has been detected in selected surface waters in the Great Lakes basin in Canada . Of the 55 sites in the Great Lakes basin sampled and analyzed for the presence of perchlorate, it was detected at concentrations near the detection limit in two samples from Hamilton Harbour and six creeks/rivers in the Maitland Valley and the Upper Thames River watersheds. The two detections in the Harbour were thought to be related to the fireworks display which had occurred prior to sampling. Presence of low but detectable concentrations of perchlorate.
One hundred and sixty (4. 1%) systems reported a detection of perchlorate (in at least 1 entry/sampling point) at levels greater than or equal to 4 µg/L (the minimum reporting level of the test). These 160 systems are located in 26 states and 2 territories and approximately 1. 9% (or 637) of the 34,331 samples collected (by these 3,865 public water supplies) had positive detections of perchlorate at levels greater than or equal to 4 µg/L. The average concentration of perchlorate.
Besides its potential to cause endocrine system and reproductive problems, perchlorate is considered a “likely human carcinogen” by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some 11 million Americans live in areas where concentrations of perchlorate.
