The breed also gradually became recognized by a number of rare breed clubs. In 1995, the UKC formally granted recognition to the Catahoula Leopard Dog as a member of the Herding Dog Group after having them compete in a number of events unrecognized for many years. At the time, there was not an official UKC breed club to sponsor the breed. This changed in October 2003 when Don Abney, Nicole Ott, and Greg Labranche got together to discuss the possibility of forming a club to promote and protect the Catahoula Leopard Dog, as well as to influence the UKC standard. The following year, a small group of dedicated fanciers formed the Catahoula Owners, Breeders, and Research Association.
