The discovery of the internucleosomal fragmentation of genomic DNA to regular repeating oligonucleosomal fragments generated by Ca/Mg-dependent endonuclease.
One of the earliest studies documenting the involvement of Zn in suppressing apoptosis was performed by Cohen and Duke26 who found that Zn inhibited the activity of Ca/Mg-dependent endonucleases responsible for nuclear DNA fragmentation in thymocytes. Studies performed later, during the 1990s, found that micromolar concentrations of Zn were able to suppress the activation of caspase-3 (see review by Truong-Tran et al.
