I started school at age 40 because I watched my husband become himself again with methadone treatment. I met all the “counselors” at the programs he attended and was absolutely unimpressed by all but the ones who had come from Mental Health or were in recovery themselves. My own training was driven by my desire to learn about methadone (NO patient or family education provided in the treatment programs) and I FORCED the professors to include it in the classes I attended, but by that time, I knew considerably more than they did from my own research, even though one had opened the first methadone program in TN in the 70s. I have been completely unimpressed with the training offered in most “addiction” counselor training.
