ActionAid India is an anti-poverty agency, working in India since 1972 with the poor people to end poverty and injustice together.Together with the people, we claim legal, constitutional and moral rights to food and livelihood, shelter, education, healthcare, dignity and a voice in decisions that affect their lives.
ActionAid has worked in India since 1972. Through a network of over 300 local organisations and community groups we work to improve the status of poor and marginalised people – mainly Dalits ('untouchables'), tribal people, women, children, homeless and disabled people.
Punjab is ground-zero for this phenomena. Dividing up small land-holdings are not a new issue for the agricultural state; it’s the skewed sex-ratio which is the real problem. In a report published in 2009, the charity Action Aid India found that among some communities in Punjab there were as less as 300 girls per 1,000 boys. Overall, it is among the worst states in the country for the female to male ratio.
This year on the 3rd of December, I attended a meeting held by Action Aid India. This was probably because we had organized a few support group meetings for caregivers at their office last year. Those that attended the support group were the fairly well off. Since a heterogeneous group of caregivers from all sections of society was wanted for the meetings, I had to make several visits to government hospitals to meet the head of the department of psychiatry to take permission to distribute notices to families.
